OneTab alternative

StoreTabs and OneTab, compared

Both save the tabs in a window into a list and close them, and both bring them back with one click. The biggest difference is where the saved tabs are kept, and what happens to them if something goes wrong.

Where your saved tabs are kept

OneTabStoreTabs
Where saved tabs are kept In the browser's internal database on your computer. Source In the extension, in a “StoreTabs” folder in your bookmarks and, if you turn it on, in a daily backup file in a folder you choose. If bookmark sync is on in your browser, your browser vendor also stores the bookmark copy, like your other bookmarks.
If you uninstall the extension The browser deletes the saved tabs, unless you use OneTab's Backup & Sync. Source The bookmark folder and backup files stay. Install StoreTabs again and it brings your sessions back from the bookmark folder.
If the browser's data is damaged For example by cleaning software or a full disk: without Backup & Sync, only a backup of the whole browser profile can bring the tabs back. Source The daily backup file, if you have turned it on, is outside the browser, and the bookmark copy travels with your browser's bookmark sync.
Sync between computers Backup & Sync: a paid yearly license, end-to-end encrypted, also between different browsers. Source Free, through your browser's own bookmark sync, between computers with the same browser (Chrome, Edge or Brave).
Account None for saving tabs. Source Backup & Sync needs an email address. Source None.

What StoreTabs does

  • Checks before it closes. Every save is read back and checked before a single tab is closed.
  • Up to three copies, and a view in the archive that shows where your tabs are stored right now.
  • Sessions you can work with: rename, pin, search every saved tab, go back to earlier versions, and a trash that keeps sessions for 30 days.
  • Tab groups are saved and opened again with their names and colors.
  • Gets your open tabs back after a crash. StoreTabs keeps track of the tabs you have open for 7 days, on this computer only.

When OneTab may suit you better

  • You want your saved tabs synced between different browsers, for example Chrome and Firefox, and are happy to pay for it.
  • You use Safari, or a browser StoreTabs isn't available for yet, such as Firefox.
  • You want an extension with a long track record: OneTab has around two million users in the Chrome Web Store.

Questions

Is anything uploaded when I import?

No. StoreTabs reads the list in your browser and sends nothing to us.

I copied the list with OneTab's “Copy links to clipboard”

That works too, whichever format OneTab is set to copy: “URL and title”, “Title and URL”, “URL only” or “Markdown”.

Can I use both?

Yes. They don't get in each other's way, so you can try StoreTabs while keeping OneTab.

Is StoreTabs free?

Yes. Saving, the archive, search, the three copies, sync between your computers and import are all free.
